LIFESTYLE

Newton is a city with pride for its past and great vision for its future.  Located just 20 minutes north of Wichita on Interstate 135, Newton offers an ideal family environment; affordable, quiet neighborhoods, outstanding schools, and abundant community activities. Newton's 19,500 residents enjoy small town living with easy access to all the amenities of the metropolitan area.

TRANSPORTATION

Major highways (I-135US-50US-81K-15), an airport, and the BNSF Railway make Newton a central location for easy transportation. Amtrak's Southwest Chief stops in Newton twice each day and provides passenger rail service towards Los Angeles and Chicago. The Amtrak station has an enclosed waiting area with accessible platform and wheelchair available.

Newton City/County Airport is located 2 miles east of Newton.

LOCAL ATTRACTIONS/ACTIVITIES

Spend a day exploring museums, stroll through some shops, see a show or walk along the bike path.

Sand Creek Station Golf Course, praised as being the 24th best municipal course you can play in the Nation by Golf Week Magazine, is a links-style 18-hole public gold course with a bent grass playing surface designed by architect Jeff Brauer. Unique features include an active railway running through the course. Sand Creek borders four holes, and eleven custom ponds.

HISTORY

Newton, the county seat, was a hub of the Santa Fe Railroad. Due to Newton promoter John C. Nicholson, the city was also at the crossroads of two major highways—81 and 50. The town founded in 1871 was named after Newton, Massachusetts, home of some of the Santa Fe stockholders.

The earliest settlers saw the movement of great herds of cattle to Abilene through the area that was to become Newton. The town became a dynamic railhead when the Santa Fe Railroad, building track from Emporia, met the Chisholm Trail. Longhorn cattle from Texas were shipped to the east coast from Newton between 1871 and 1873. With a mix of cowboys, saloons and brothels, Newton became known as “the wickedest town in the West.”
